[prMac.com] Antwerp, Belgium - Different Bits today is pleased to introduce Chalkin' Chimp's Chalkboard 1.0 for iPad, their magical sketching and painting app for kids and artists of any age. Hosted by master of the Chalkboard, the animated cartoon character Chimpy the Chalkin' Chimp, the app allows kids to easily create awesome line, light, and color effects. Young artists can save, edit, display, and email their works, and enter a monthly contest to win prizes from the Chalkin' Chimp's Online Store.
The app is designed to overcome the anxiety, self-criticism, doubt, and inhibition that prevent children from exploring their artistic gifts. Emphasizing the unselfconscious, slapstick, cartoon reality, that gives unlimited license to artistic experimentation, the app sets the mood and provides the tools for every young person to discover the artist living inside them. The goal is to overcome all preconceived ideas surrounding artistic self-expression, creativity, spontaneity, competition, and judgment.
On launch, a well-used blackboard fills the portrait mode screen. An animated cartoon chimp slides onscreen, waving welcome, accompanied by a cool reggae synth track. Tickling different parts of his body elicits chimp screams, wild movement, and smooches. Ladybugs and butterflies wander across the screen, disappearing into drops of colored light when touched; the very young child may be content never to move beyond the splash screen. Touching the pencil icon on the lower right prepares the app for sketching: all items slide off the screen leaving the empty chalkboard and five icons on the bottom.
Essentially a touchscreen version of Photoshop for kids, the app makes it simple to create startlingly beautiful creations immediately. The user intuitively draws on the chalkboard with their index finger, and luminescent colors magically appear. The touchscreen's sensitivity is so great that the texture of the fingertip can be discerned in the lines and fields of color. Without thinking, the artist has filled the chalkboard with digital doodles that are fascinating in themselves, all the more so for the absence of any actual chalk, crayon, or paint.

From right to left, the wrench icon allows moving backward and forward in the sequence of creating a sketch, and also controls cleaning the chalkboard to start a new sketch. The painter's palette brings up a full screen color wheel and brightness slider, enabling the selection of any conceivable color. The pencil point icon launches a slider which controls the thickness of lines created with any tool. The tool icon displays the current tool, and touching it displays the tool window, containing a: crayon, paintbrush, paint roller, and eraser. Finally, the light bulb icon can be set on or off, controlling special lighting, brush, and color blending effects (with marvelous, unanticipated results).
All sketches can be saved and re-opened and edited. The sketch library includes integrated Facebook and email connectivity for sharing artwork, the provision to save a photo of any sketch for use as wallpaper, and a link to the Chalkin' Chimp's Chalkboard website and Online Store.
