[prMac.com] London, United Kingdom - FIPLAB Ltd, the graduate start-up behind the leading iPhone app for the Baclays Cycle Hire Scheme announced today that its London Cycle: Maps & Routes application has surpassed 80,000 user downloads in less than 4 weeks since its launch on the iTunes AppStore.
The app, which has been a hit success from day one, has received numerous write ups on leading publications such as the Evening Standard and has been ranked on iTunes as the Number 1 Free Travel application. FIPLAB state that the application's continued success is down to strong word of mouth by its user community, who are passionate about providing them with valuable feedback, allowing them to work towards their goal of creating the perfect companion tool for the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme.
What's interesting is that the application is not just being used by cycle hire members, but also regular cyclists who are using the app due to the cycle-safe routes it provides. The routes allow cyclists to avoid busy roads and minimises the number of right-hand turns required to reach a destination.
After a string of updates, the company is now planning to further expand its userbase by porting their application to the BlackBerry and Android mobile platforms.
Rishi Modha, Co-founder of FIPLAB, commented: "We created this app after becoming aware of the difficulties that users of the cycle hire scheme would face with hiring cycles, finding places to dock them and traveling safely from point A to B. Our London Cycle: Maps & Routes app solves these key problems - it can easily be used to locate cycle stations, access real time cycle availability data, plot cycle-safe routes and keep track of rental charges."
Rather than charging users to download their application, FIPLAB are giving away the app for free and instead, are looking to secure corporate sponsors who wish to align their brand name to a sustainable and green form of transport. "Sponsors will gain the ability to promote their brand, products and services to a userbase of over 80,000 people, made up largely of business professionals, academics and university students", said Modha.
Anirudh Sharma, Co-founder of FIPLAB, added: "At present, the scheme is only open to pre-registered members, i.e. those who have signed up online and received their access key. We expect another surge in user downloads once the scheme opens up to the casual public and tourists next month."
"From our analytics reports, we currently have in the region of 20,000 active users per day - so it is evident that London's cyclists can brave the rains! Furthermore, we noticed the largest positive spikes in our app's usage occurs during 7am to 8am, 5pm to 6pm and 9pm to 10pm. It is incredibly interesting to observe these usage numbers and is encouraging to see the sheer volume of people in London making the most of this scheme", said Sharma.
