# iLiveMath Farm Fresh - Stone Soup to a Bushel and a Peck

in Education (E)

[prMac.com] Sacramento, California - iHomeEducator today is pleased to release iLiveMath Farm Fresh for K-7th grade, which is featured on iTunes "New and Noteworthy" under the Education category. Why Word Problems? Word problems are hard - They are typically more difficult because the student must understand what the problem is asking before solving the actual problem. It prepares the student for higher learning.

Word problems illustrate life - We love taking the concepts taught in the classroom and weaving them with real life topics, bringing education to life.

Here's what Pragmatic Mom blogger said "My oldest who says she hates math says that she loves word problems because they are not math but puzzles. Go figure? I don't care though. If she can do complex, multi-step math word problems then I know the other stuff at school will be fine. At the end of the day, there will be calculators for math facts when she's an adult, but to figure out which buttons to push, she'll have to know how to convert words to number sentences which will require logical thinking."

Level 1: Basic Counting

Color splashed photographs of apples, oranges, strawberries, etc... Each photo was hand color splashed by our family (using the ColorSplash iPad app). They show a pattern of random fruits and vegetables to be counted between 1 and 16. This level can be read to a child like a story book. The child begins to learn colors, patterns, and fruits/vegetables. The child can also "pick an answer" from the picker. The format of the picker is the same as other iLiveMath apps so it can help teach how this app operates as they grow into Level 2.

Level 2: Stone Soup

As a fun twist on the folktale "Stone Soup" the town's people bring tomatoes, corn, potatoes, etc. and drop them into the stone soup... the folktale started in Easter Europe and has been told many ways however the basic teaching is "teamwork". How does the town work together when they originally could not? The soldiers in this version of the story pull out 3 stones and call the towns folk together to help them cook this soup. The story then builds the foundation and purpose to the addition problems.

Level 3: Agriculture Word Problems (4th to 6th grade)

This level introduces a bushel, peck, flat, pint, liter, etc. Problems will look at the students ability to calculate 4 digit numbers as well as apply multi-step operations to problems. Even adults will need to think twice about these mental math puzzles. The natural language engine will use nouns, verbs, volume terms, and quantities to formulate sentences which are associated to the photographs. The word problems and their associated answers are nearly endless across three levels of difficulty.

Just like the previous iLiveMath apps, students and teachers can collaborate on word math problems using Twitter, email, and blogs. Questions are asked and the student selects the answer from a picker dial. The student is then provided immediate correct or incorrect feedback.
