[prMac.com] Pfaeffikon, Switzerland - Power App is pleased today to introduce QR-Reader 1.0 for iOS, their new app that allows users to scan, read, and record standard bar codes and square QR codes. Users simply enter scan mode, focus on the code to be read using their iOS device camera, and press Scan. Immediately, the photo is saved, and the alphanumeric translation is displayed. The app supports QR Codes, EAN/UPC Product Codes, Code 128, DataBar, Code 93, Code 39 and Interleaved 2 of 5. Should the scanned code contain a web page URL, pressing the Link button takes the user directly to that page.
While cell phone cameras lack the capabilities of dedicated, self-illuminating, bar code scanners, their use for scanning is rapidly growing in popularity. Consumers enjoy the convenience of quick and accurate capture of detailed information, particularly when the data can be easily used in a mobile application. Catalogs, DVDs, CDs, books, groceries, and coupons are some of the major areas in which cell phone camera scanning has become common.
The square-shaped QR (Quick Response) code is the newest matrix barcode readable by camera phones. The information encoded can be text, a URL, or other data. Originally developed for tracking vehicle parts, the QR code is now used extensively for mobile phone scanning, which is known as mobile tagging. The code has a maximum capacity of 4,296 characters.
* Use any camera-equipped iOS device to scan a variety of matrix barcodes
* Point and shoot scanning, reading, and recording of UPC bar codes and QR codes
* Translation in alphanumeric display appears below the photo of the code
* In-app Internet connectivity allows users to link to encoded URLs
"Scanning product codes was just the beginning," stated Power App's Christian Schaffner. "Now, QR codes allow users to scan URLs, addresses, product information, personal messages, and more."
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* iOS 3.2 or later (iOS 4 tested)
* 2.4 MB
