[prMac.com] Dayton, Ohio - Verietas Software announced today the availability of Wizard Clock and Wizard Clock Viewer for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Wizard Clock is a fun and novel approach to private social location monitoring. Friend's locations are received in real-time and displayed on a clock as antique hands. As your friend's position changes, the hands animate around the clock to point at the label for their new location. Users can watch as many friends as they like, in the list of friends, but the clock face itself is limited to seven friends at a time. Users can configure which friends are displayed and whether the app will receive real-time location updates from each user via push notification.
Wizard Clock has a beautiful and entertaining user interface, but it's central purpose is privacy. "Most people I know have been very hesitant to use the location aware features of all the social networking apps and websites available today," said Josh Pressnell, Verietas Software Founder, "Every one of these services shows your actual GPS location or the address you checked in at. With all the stories in the news about criminals using these services for their own purposes, people are justified in worrying about their privacy.
Wizard Clock never lets your real location leave your device. For a user to know where you really are, they must know you well enough to associate your configured location label with the physical location. A stranger won't be able to associate your user name with where 'Home' really is, but your spouse or sibling certainly can." The app's ability to maintain privacy while at the same time letting those who do know you maintain awareness of your location is the key discriminator offered by Wizard Clock.
Another useful feature is Wizard Clock's ability to automatically update the user's location (available for iOS 4 devices only). Unlike most other location monitoring apps, Wizard Clock does not leave location services running continuously, draining your battery. While operating in the background, location services are turned on for only a short period of time every ten minutes.
This allows the app to provide continual automatic location updates, but significantly reduce battery drain while operating in the background. The app also supports the iOS "Significant Location" service, allowing the app to update location using cellular location services with lower power consumption. The app can also be used without background updates entirely, allowing the user to update locations manually.
"We feel that Wizard clock fulfills a real need in the mobile app community," said Pressnell, "The existence of so many location aware services in the market today indicates that users do want this kind of capability, but so far only Wizard Clock has addressed both the simplicity of automatic updates as well as the real valid privacy concerns of the community."
