[prMac.com] London, England - The last twelve months have seen a sharp rise in the amount of children's book apps for Apple's fabulously successful iPad. To date, most publishers and developers have preferred reworking fairy tales and classics from the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm for content. But now Wivern Digital, a brand new digital production house based in London, believes it's time to break fresh ground by developing interactive apps for the iPad with completely original content promising broad cross-media appeal.
Wivern's first signing in its bid to capture a share of the growing book-app market is Addison's Tales - an innovative digital book label that combines new music and animation within app novels designed for readers aged 10 and up. Wivern recently signed Addison's Tales after the digital book label was featured as one of the twelve winning examples of 21st Century storytelling at the 2010 Frankfurt Book Fair.
The creative head of Addison's Tales, Australian transmedia engineer Jerome Goerke, believes the current period of app development is akin to the early days of frame animation, with all the potential that entails.
"Apple's new iPad and the exciting developments in the field of epublishing offer fantastic opportunities for creatives and transmedia storytellers alike. For example, in the past, when you were reading the Hobbit, you never knew the tune the dwarves were singing. So Addison's Tales takes that concept of music in books and brings it to life in the form of Enlivened Rhymes."
As Wivern director Garth Palmer explains it, Enlivened Rhymes are illustrations embedded into the pages of the apps that come to life in the form of beautifully animated mini-musical interludes, so that the reader can see and hear what a character is singing in the story.
"Thanks to a fantastic team of professional musicians, coders, sound engineers, animators and illustrators, I think we can really set a new standard in storytelling with Addison's Tales. What's really good, is that because each contributor is so talented, there's this challenge to match the quality the previous creative has revealed, which is obviously great for the end reader," Palmer said.
Much of the production will occur in Europe's present hub of creativity, Berlin, although the final app will be sold over Apple's app store and later made available for other mobile devices. The original music from the apps is also destined for single purchase through Apple's iTunes.
The new Addison's Tales trailer is already viewable online at Youtube and Wivern's blog. Here fans can also follow developments in storyboarding, character development and app programming on 'Penelope' - Wivern's first planned release for the Addison's Tales label scheduled for late 2011.
