New ebook + Online Learning Community Launched

CJRTOOLS ebooks just released a new course book of lessons on Mac OS X (Tiger) that is packaged with a free limited time membership in a private online learning community led by the book's author, Claire J Rottenberg. The ebook, "Introduction to Mac OS X 10.4," covers six topics (Finder, Spotlight, System Preferences, Mail, Address Book and iCal, and Safari) in 24 lessons that provide detailed instructions, short practice exercises and longer assignments, often in the form of exploratory questions. The purpose of the online community is to further explore the concepts from the lessons in an interactive, collaborative learning environment.
Claire J Rottenberg, the author of four other ebooks on Mac OS X (Tiger) and an experienced educator, explains her reasons for this new project as a way to meld her experiences of over 20 years using Mac computers with her 30 years of teaching. "I wanted to create a unique community where I could learn along with readers of my book, a place where we are all equal in the learning process. But, I didn't want anyone to feel they had to join the learning group to benefit from the lessons so I wrote a comprehensive book and am providing the learning group as a free option for others who, like me, want to share and extend their learning."
Each of the six topics is divided into an introduction, four lessons, a summary, and a comprehensive assignment on the topic. Lessons include explanations of concepts and instructions for applying the concepts, followed by short exercises. As an example, the section on Spotlight begins with an explanation of the types of data used by Spotlight and continues with instructions and short exercises for searching with Spotlight.
Although the course book is designed primarily for beginning users of Mac OS X 10.4, enough information is provided to also help some intermediate level users, especially if they take advantage of the learning community. Claire plans on writing future course books for more experienced users, as well as one for Leopard users.
The first course book, "Introduction to Mac OS X 10.4," is available now for $18. Members of Apple user groups can take advantage of a 20% discount, available through the Apple user group vendor program. After a payment is processed, Claire will send an invitation to the purchaser for a six-week membership in the learning community, but membership starts only when the invitation is accepted.
