[prMac.com] Mesquite, Texas - Free Range Eggheads, a developer of educational iOS apps for children, is excited to announce the release of their first app, Spell Whiz 1.1. Available for the iPad, Spell Whiz is easy to master but can provide hours of entertainment and learning. Spell Whiz contains a dictionary of over 1,000 English words compiled from nationwide spelling lists made for pre school through second grade. There are no quizzes, timers, rules, or automatic pieces, allowing the child complete, organic control over the interface.
When a letter is dragged, it pronounces its sound, not its name. In the case of a letter that has more than one sound (vowels, for instance) each sound is pronounced in succession. The letter sounds are pronounced correctly by a native English speaking child which makes the app more appealing to children.
The touch and drag interface is easy for even small children to master. Touch and drag the letters to the blanks in any order you want, with no rules as to placement. Children are allowed freedom to experiment with sounds and language. Touch the flower to determine if the letters put together are a word. If the word is not recognized, a shrugging child covered in question marks will appear, suggesting not that this is not a word (as it may be a word that is simply not in the dictionary), but that the app does not know it.
It is designed to be used alongside human based spelling instruction. Its open ended design means the app adapts to the skill of the child, allowing very young children to simply explore letter sounds while older children can master spelling. Once a word is spelled correctly, and the check flower touched, an image of the word will appear on the screen. For instance, if the word "DOG" is spelled, a picture of a dog will appear.
Spell Whiz also includes custom control over the environment. Twelve cute avatars, from multi ethnic kids to different animals and bugs, allow the children to pick the cartoon they choose to represent them. Multiple options for displaying letters are available. You can choose to turn on or off Montessori coloring (with vowels and consonants colored differently) and on or off capitalization.
Spell Whiz pays careful attention to sounds and music. There is no background music or button beeps. Small children are free to completely concentrate on the sounds of each of the letters.
"This app has real potential," says founder and developer Amber Butler. "My two year old son gets very frustrated with spelling apps that won't allow him to place letters in the wrong spot, or make him spell "dog" when he wants to do something else. With Spell Whiz, he has complete, open ended control over the interface. He loves moving letters around and is learning their sounds. My three year old daughter is constantly asking to play "the spell game," because she gets such great delight in spelling a word and watching it appear on the screen."
Spell Whiz offers fun and learning for children ages 2-6.
