Lake George Enthusiast Releases iOS App for Boaters

in Travel

[prMac.com] Greenfield Center, New York- Last summer Jim Mastrianni was boating on Lake George and could not find a landmark he was looking for. "I took the NYS boater's safety class 30 years ago in the Bolton Landing Veteran's Memorial Park and have been boating on the lake ever since. I thought I knew the lake like the back of my hand."

Perplexed, Mastrianni did what most folks do when they're lost; he reached for his smartphone and searched Google Maps. Shockingly, Google came up short and couldn't find the landmark either. More shockingly, the weak cell signal on the lake prevented the data-rich maps from downloading. "All I saw was a blue dot marking my location on a blank screen. I thought to myself there must be a better way...there should be an app for that."

Mastrianni, an entrepreneur and computer geek, identified more than 300 points-of-interest accessible by boat that he entered into a custom database. Relying upon his years of experience on the lake and reading about the lake, Mastrianni wrote a brief description of the points listed in the app. Each point is geotagged for locating on the map and assigned keywords making it easy to find items of interest to boaters. The maps are included with the app download and work anywhere on the lake, even sections with spotty or no cell service.

Searching for gas, restaurants with docks, emergency services, weather information, bays, islands and other places is easy using the app. Many of the search keywords came directly from Mastrianni's experience giving friends and relatives tours of the lake. "People wanted to know where to hike, where to cliff jump, where to eat, where to get a permit, the location of Log Bay. The romantics quietly asked which islands had only a single campsite. I took those conversations and built them into the app."

Phone numbers and web links are included as well. "It's really convenient to make a reservation for a campsite, picnic site or even a restaurant from within the app. With one tap you can call or view the website for Reserve America to make camping reservations or you can call any restaurant on the lake. If you get in trouble, one tap shows Emergency Services and Marinas. Tap again to dial the phone and help will be on the way."

The app includes unique weather information specialized for Lake George: "There are a lot of weather apps that already do a great job so it was important to offer something unique and still useful. I was able to find a little known forecast specifically written for Lake George recreational use. Best of all, this app can even give you the water temperature!"

Mastrianni states there are many benefits to using the Lake George Boater's Directory: "The app is priced considerably lower than any paper map or book available for the lake; offers GPS and other functionality than paper cannot; easily fits in your pocket; and is with you whenever you have your phone, which is pretty much always. Now, instead of relying on the back of your hand, you can rely on the Lake George Boaters Directory in the palm of your hand."
