Maps 3D Brings the Third Dimension to the iPhone
April 25, 2013 in Navigation
[prMac.com] Gleisweiler, Germany - movingworld announced Maps 3D v.3.1 for iOS. You can rely on Maps 3D wherever you are - but the world's first offline 3D map with route planner is really fun when the terrain is challenging and you're off the beaten track.
"Whether you're trail running in California, mountain biking in Maine or snowboarding in Colorado - our Maps 3D iPhone app is your ideal companion for extended trips through jaw-dropping scenery", says Moritz Gaupp, app developer and founder of the company movingworld. "Wherever you are in the world, our app shows you the exact altitude live for any location and any waypoint on a clear 3D map", explains Moritz. "This is all possible as we were the first company ever to combine NASA elevation scans of the Earth with the best outdoor maps: USGS Topographic Maps and OpenStreetMap (OSM)."
Thanks to this, Maps 3D users don't just know where they are at any given time, they also know what upcoming challenges they're going to face along the rest of their route. What's more, as the maps are displayed in 3D, it makes it easier for users to orient themselves even in unfamiliar surroundings as it's really easy to pick out landmarks such as mountains, hills and bodies of water.
Maps 3D lets you plan your route in advance by specifically navigating to coordinates, setting waypoints on the map or selecting points of interest (POI) for the starting point and final destination. The app calculates online the best route in each case for drivers, cyclists or walkers, and also displays the elevation profile for the particular route. What's more, you can of course take a walk on the wild side whenever you want and take yourself off on a route of discovery. A tap on the screen starts the handy tracking function - Maps 3D then records the track including performance stats such as average speed as well as the altitude ascended and descended. You can save this info as a GPX file and share it - along with the best snapshots - with your friends or training partners such as via email, Facebook or Twitter.
Those who are in unfamiliar surroundings and prefer to stay on the safe side or those who want to benchmark their performance against other sports fanatics can download GPX files of routes that others have already been on such as from the website Everytrail.com. Once imported into Maps 3D, the route opens automatically at the correct map tile and an arrow always shows you your current position and how much of the route you've covered.
Currently there are nine different map versions available for the USA, including hi-res aerial images and the official USGS Topographic Maps from which you can put together the nicest route sections before you set off. In addition, the local transport map is ideal for planning city tours as well as for choosing arrival and departure points.
