[prMac.com] London, United Kingdom - Lots of apps claim to make you happier, but are any of those claims based on scientific research? For the first time ever, scientists at the prestigious Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience of University College London have released an app designed to boost happiness from the comfort of your iPhone. Built on the science of emotions and facial expressions, Pocket Smile 1.2 for iOS is a crowdsourcing happiness experiment testing if seeing faces of smiling people could make them happier. Pocket Smile has shown over 66,000 smiles to people all over the world! That's almost as much as an adult smiles in 4 years!
The science behind the app is as simple as the idea itself. Did you ever notice that smiling, like laughter, is contagious? That's because our brains are wired to automatically adopt the same expression of the faces we see. This process of facial mimicry happens so fast and automatically that people are rarely aware that it is happening. This is essential to recognise and interpret others' emotions and since it is automatic, people smile every time they see a smiling face shown by Pocket Smile on their iPhones.
Although the fundamental premise is supported by previous experiments and this is the first science-based, drug-free, and side-effect free treatment for low mood, to see if Pocket Smile can have a positive long term effect on mood we have made the app available for free for iPhones. Download the app and start spreading smiles.

Pocket Smile was created by Javier Elkin, Dr Parashkev Nachev, and Prof. Geraint Rees, Director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London (UCL). UCL was founded in 1826 and was the first university institution to be founded in London and the first in England to be established on an entirely secular basis, to admit students regardless of their religion and to admit women on equal terms with men. Described by The Sunday Times as 'an intellectual powerhouse with a world-class reputation', UCL is consistently ranked as one of the top three multi-faculty universities in the UK and features in the top 4 universities worldwide. Nearly 40% of our students come from outside the UK and they represent more than 140 different countries. They are welcomed for the different perspectives and diversity they bring to teaching and learning at UCL. Copyright (C) 2013-2014 Pocket Smile. All Rights Reserved.
