Award Winning Weather App Wx Now Available for Apple iPad

October 18, 2010 in Weather

[prMac.com] Williamsburg Virginia - Hunter Research and Technology today is pleased to announce the iPad version of its weather app Wx, which was named a 2009 Mac Gem by Macworld magazine. Wx displays current conditions, forecasts, alerts, and radar for U.S. locations using high fidelity XML data from the National Weather Service. The app is designed for two types of customers: serious weather watchers who want detailed information and facts with no fuss, and casual users who want a fast, clean, and functional weather app that has low memory overhead and low CPU/battery usage.

Wx helps users set up locations on an embedded map, guiding them to choose nearby NWS observation sites, nearby NEXRAD radar, and nearby city- and county-based alert zones. The app sets up a 7-day summary "point" forecast customized for the specific latitude and longitude of the location, and a 7-day "pro" forecast that graphs temperature (actual and apparent), dew point, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, gust speed, 12-hour probability of precipitation, 6-hour liquid precipitation amount, and 6-hour snow amount. With their high spatial resolution, the point and pro forecasts are especially useful in coastal and mountainous regions, where typical zone forecasts can be inaccurate.

Wx also lets users setup weather maps for quick reference. Users can choose from 18 default NWS maps and images, or provide the URL for any map of interest and load it right in the app. This allows users to access their favorite weather maps and images from preferred weather providers and keep them handy.

Wx is crafted with attention to detail by a professional software developer with 20 years of experience, 5 years focused on developing weather software for Mac OS X and 2 years writing apps for iOS devices. The app has multiple levels of redundancy to handle severe weather events that can strain NWS servers, and offers network settings for both Wi-Fi and 3G operation so that users can fine tune the app's performance and bandwidth needs. Wx operates in portrait and landscape orientations, and offers an efficient user interface design for each mode.

Pricing and Availability:
Wx for iPad 1.0 is available on the U.S. iTunes App Store for an introductory price of $3.99. The app runs on any iPad with OS 3.2 or later. More information, including screenshots, is available on the Hunter Research and Technology website. Media professionals interested in reviewing Wx can request a promotional code to download the app from iTunes at no cost.
