[prMac.com] Vienna, Austria - MacItBetter today is pleased to announce the immediate availability of BetterZip 2.2 for Mac OS X. BetterZip lets you quickly look inside compressed archives without first extracting their contents. With BetterZip you can add or extract files via drag-and-drop, delete files from an archive, rename files, and create new folders inside the archive.
BetterZip sports a clean new user interface which will look familiar to most Mac users. Similar to the Finder it has a sidebar on the left side into which you can drop your favorite folders for archives, e.g., your downloads folder. In addition to the preview sidebar, BetterZip 2.2 has Quick Look built-in: Select a file in the archive and press the spacebar to preview it with Quick Look.
The new archive password manager helps you work with encrypted archives. You can have BetterZip collect a list of archive passwords in your keychain. These can be used automatically whenever you open an encrypted archive. Alternatively, BetterZip can display them in a list in the password panel, so you can easily choose the one to use.
When you open a file in an archive with the View command and edit it with an external editor, BetterZip will detect the changes and give you the option to update the archive.
BetterZip offers two configurable services: one for creating and one for extracting archives. Choose a preset for each which can be started through the Services menu, the Finder contextual menu and even be given a shortcut key.
Presets collect all settings that can be applied to an archive, from the destination folder and archive format, to passwords and even a script to execute after the operation completed.
BetterZip opens, extracts, and even creates fully WinZip compatible AES-256 encrypted zip archives. Furthermore, BetterZip can extract and create zip files larger than 2 GB as well as archives with these formats: tar, gzip, bzip2, rar, xar, and 7-zip. Even more formats can be viewed and extracted: arj, cpio, lzh/lha, cab, iso, chm, sit, hqx, and bin. BetterZip also opens various zip based Java archives: jar, war, sar, par, ear, and wsr files.
Pricing and Availability:
BetterZip is completely 64-bit and requires Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later. The trial version can be downloaded from MacItBetter online and is fully functional for 30 days. A single user license can be purchased for $19.95 (USD), and it is also available in the Mac App Store.
