Interactive Digital Book on Dock Ellis Covers All The Bases
June 11, 2012 in Books
[prMac.com] San Francisco, California - The iBook Beyond Ellis D (Alexander/Swift; June, 2012) takes on colorful pitching sensation Dock Ellis in the futuristic frontier of multi-platform tablet reading. Ellis moved from Major League Baseball stardom to drug counseling to - following his death in 2008 - viral video fame, and writer Donnell Alexander's analysis of this athlete that the system could not contain hits with a wallop that's beyond even LSD.
Beyond Ellis D seeks to illuminate the often overlooked aspects of Dock's life that - for better or for worse - is most remembered for the no-hitter he pitched while under the influence of acid. Alexander's 2008 interview (with Neille Ilel) helped separate from myth from fact in this astonishing performance. Last week National Public Radio's Unfictional aired a half-hour special called The Ballad of Dock Ellis", featuring Alexander's voice and research and opening the doors of public perception that can't help but lead followers of this unpreditable story to Beyond Ellis D. Far more than - to quote Alexander - "the John Henry of Hallucinogens" , the Los Angeles native is revealed to have been an activist in jock's clothing. His exploits and influence extended past accidental drug accomplishments; Ellis used his celebrity to challenge and educate society on many levels.
Alexander/Swift's digital creation takes full advantage of the iBook platform by incorporating an animated video trilogy, the first of which debuted in May on Gawker Media's Deadspin site to much acclaim and web traffic. Among other treats, Beyond Ellis D features the music of Los Angeles band Rademacher and an insightful audio interview with acclaimed singer-songwriter Barbara Manning, whose song "Dock Ellis" with S.F. Seals is the stuff of American post-punk legend.
Beyond Ellis D becomes available for download on June 4. A launch party in San Francisco will follow.
