Xword does not require as much memory space as other crossword apps. Generated puzzles are not the sparsely populated, free-form puzzles so typical of most computer-generated crosswords. This app produces fully formed, professional looking puzzles, similar to the crossword puzzles featured in daily newspapers. Xword's database of clues and words employs Webster's dictionary with over 31,000 entries and has a planned expansion for Webster's and Oxford standard word spellings.
Xword creates puzzles in a wide variety of sizes and styles. The size can be selected from 9x9, 11x11, 13x13 and 15x15, and the grid style can be selected from American, British, Bar, and Novelty styles. American Style grids are characterized by the fact that every cell in the puzzle is formed by the intersection of an Across word and a Down word. This results in a tendency for the puzzle to have many short words. Quite difficult to construct, American Style puzzles are relatively easy to solve.
British Style grids have many solitary cells that are not situated at the intersection of two words. Easier to construct, they are much more difficult to solve, as these puzzles feature a greater percentage of longer words. In Bar Style puzzles, every cell of the puzzles will contain a letter. The pattern is created by bars rather than black cells. A cell containing a bar terminates a word in the same way that a black cell does, but it also contains a letter. The flexibility provided by bars allows a much greater proportion of longer words than can be achieved by the American style. A Novelty Style grid is one that contains a number of Tunnel cells. A Tunnel cell does not contain a letter and does not terminate a word. It changes the direction of any word that encounters it. Tunnel cells can also be introduced into both American and British style grids.
Once a puzzle has been created, players can begin to solve it using an intuitive set of tap and swipe gestures. If players experience difficulty with any section of the puzzle, they can get help. Users may access help through a setting that reveals a single letter at a time. Or, users may be shown the location of any errors within the puzzle. A timer provides an indication of how long a player is taking to complete the puzzle, and a Clear button allows players the opportunity to clear, reset, and begin the puzzle again.
"Don't get 'boxed in' by other crossword puzzles," stated AUS-PC-SOFT Shareware's John Stevens. "Xword takes crossword puzzles to the next level!"
