October 20, 2010 in Reference (E)

[prMac.com] Austin-based Funny Farm Industries today introduces Pickin' Chicken 1.0 for iOS, their complete, illustrated guide to over 75 different breeds and numerous additional breed varieties of chickens. Designed for eco-conscious urban farmers, backyard chicken enthusiasts, 4-H and FFA members, students, teachers, and full-time farmers, the app allows the user to find the ideal chicken breed for eggs, meat, personality, or any combination. Included are 14 Search Categories, rare and heritage breeds, over 250 photos, a Glossary of terms, a list of Resources, and tips on chicken care.

Pickin' Chicken is the perfect companion for anyone captivated by the recent backyard chicken phenomenon. The growing interest in knowing the source of our food supply has catapulted the chicken into the national limelight with stories on the chicken movement from high profile magazines such as the New Yorker to popular entertainers, such as Martha Stewart, a chicken supporter since the 1980's. Online chicken forums with over 50,000 members, the rise in popularity of the urban coop tour, the locavore, green and sustainable living movements, and the rise in chicken media coverage all attest to the burgeoning interest in this field.

On launch in the portrait mode, Pickin' Chicken begins by asking, "Why do you want chickens?" Four icon-illustrated buttons permit the following choices: Eggs, Meat, Dual (both Eggs & Meat), and Surprise Me (wildcard choice). Navigation through a quick set of questions will bring the user to a results screen on the "Picked Chicks". Each search result listing includes a thumbnail photo, the breed name, heritage, icons for egg size & color, and the weight at harvest time. Selecting any of the breed listings brings up a Summary, as well as a detailed entry on that particular breed of chicken, with full screen photos with zoom abilities.
