In fact, the FDA announced this week that they are modifying nutrition labels to better reflect the needs of the current shopper. Rather than waiting for the label to change, Pushpins, Inc., today announced the launch of a new app that makes it easy for shoppers to compare the nutrition of their favorite foods. The app, called Food Fight!!, is a fun and informative nutrition comparison tool that allows shoppers to gain insight into nutrition facts like calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and cholesterol.
When using the app, users search for the brand, product, or Universal Product Code (UPC) of their favorite products. Food Fight!! instantly compares the products across five dimensions and declares a winner of the food fight based on which is healthier. Users can compare the products based on a single serving size or an equivalent 100g measurement. Shoppers can share the winner with their friends on Facebook and challenge them to put their favorite foods in the ring.
"We wanted to make it easy and fun for shoppers to make healthy eating choices," said Jason Gurwin, CEO and co-founder of Pushpins. "Nutrition labels are informative, but can be overwhelming for some consumers. We wanted to make choosing the right foods as simple as declaring a winner and a loser."
The app leverages Pushpins' new SimpleUPC grocery API to retrieve product information, nutrition facts, and images. In a future update, Food Fight!! will provide further details on the foods shoppers compare like daily value percentages and ingredients.
