Arctic Watch iOS Released - Second largest ice melt in recorded history

December 20, 2011 in Utilities (E)

[] Sausalito, California - Press Start Studios today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of Arctic Watch 1.98 for iPhone and iPad. Arctic Watch aims to raise awareness about the Arctic, with access to daily measurements taken from NASA's earth orbiting satellite systems.

The Arctic ice cap freezes each winter as the sun sets for months at a time below the horizon. It swiftly melts each summer as the sun rises higher in the warming northern sky. Each year the sea ice reaches its annual minimum melt extent in September, but hit a record low in 2007. This year the Arctic Sea ice melted to its second lowest extent in recorded human history. Unprecedented amounts of new data shows that this trend is accelerating.

NSIDC Director Mark Serreze said, "It looks like the spring ice cover is so thin now that large areas melt out in summer, even without persistent extreme weather patterns."

Arctic Watch for iOS is an interactive map of satellite photos that highlight the seasonal ice melt of the north and south pole. It utilizes the NASA Aqua satellite system to retrieve daily updates, and incorporate them into charts and animations that allow you to see trends extending back as far as 30 years.

Arctic Watch is shedding new light on earth science in a way that is accessible for kids and adults. The app is translated in over 13 international languages, and has been adopted in innovative new science programs in Canada, Russia and the US.
