[prMac.com] Silver Spring, Maryland - PicPocket Books has released a new beautifully photographed story for the iPad called, Choco Gets a Check-up (coming soon for iPhone). Choco is a little brown bunny who loves to learn and do new things. Today though, Choco has to do something that makes him a bit nervous. He has to go ... to the doctor! This whimsical photo book will ease the fears of any child as they join Choco on a visit to Dr. Poppi in his cabin in the woods. Photo pages of a real check-up and a story line based on Fry's Instant Words, add meaning and educational value to the beautiful photos of Choco and his friends.
"I'm so excited that Choco is now available for iPad," says author and teacher, Mary Faulhaber. "Parents and teachers can now calm their children's fears with the relevant story line. And they can foster reading skills with the simple methods included that I have used successfully to teach reading to my own children and students for the past 30 years."
Choco Gets a Check-up was written for Faulhaber's own children and her reading students, and features Choco, the actual therapy animal in her classroom. The app is a full-color, interactive storybook that features original music, a professionally recorded voiceover artist, imbedded comprehension questions, and relevant animations. A list of Fry's Instant Words used in the book, and simple teaching strategies are also included. Audio-synchronated word highlighting allows children to follow along. A simple touch lets them hear any word read again, making this App a valuable tool for independent reading practice. Parents/teachers are encouraged to visit the Choco Gets a Check-up Facebook page for plenty of conversation about how to teach reading. As a reading book, it is recommended after basic phonics instruction has begun and is for emerging readers who are ready for a combination of phonics and sight word reading. But the engaging storyline and photographs will delight readers of all ages and is sure to be a happy part of many a bedtime snuggle!

Based in Silver Spring, Maryland. Established in the spring of 2009, PicPocket Books was founded by the husband and wife team of Lynette and Manuel Mattke, who share a passion for children's literature and technological innovation. To download any of the PicPocket Books apps, please visit the iTunes App Store and search for 'PicPocket Books.' PicPocket Books offer parents and their kids an alternative to flashy, and sometimes violent, fast-paced video games. Their book apps have some simple animations and/or interactive hot spots to encourage exploration and engagement. Overall, they strive to remain quite faithful to the original books with their apps and want to be careful not to obscure the reading experience with too much interactivity. They champion books and reading aloud to kids, and see bookapps as supplements, not replacements, for print books and the valuable time parents can spend reading with their kids. If having kids' books available on mobile devices means more exposure to stories and enthusiasm for reading for kids, then that is a success! Copyright (C) 2011 PicPocket Books. All Rights Reserved.
