[prMac.com] Minneapolis, Minnesota - Preschool University today is pleased to introduce ABC SPANISH SPELLING MAGIC 1.0-Deletreador Magico free for iOS, their 19th Education app that provides practice in spelling common Spanish words of 3-7 letters. When the child touches a picture or letter, they hear the corresponding word or sound aloud. Kids must drag letters into a line to correctly spell words. There are two modes of play: Scrambled Letters, where students are provided with only the required letters, and Movable Alphabet, where they must select letters from the alphabet. Ideal for helping young Spanish speakers master the relationship between letter sounds, word sounds, and correct spelling, the app can also be used by students of any age learning Spanish.
ABC SPANISH SPELLING MAGIC opens with an operations window, where users can check Scrambled Letters mode or Movable Alphabet mode, Sound On/Off, Help On/Off, and the maximum letters per word (3, 4, 5, 6, or 7). Then, kids can choose from one of 10 different categories of words: animals, household items, colors, parts of the body, fruits, numbers, clothes, activities, vegetables, and a random mix. In both modes of play, the color photo occupies the center of the screen that is in landscape orientation. At the bottom of the screen are between three and seven empty white windows shaped like playing cards. In Scrambled Letters Mode, the number of letters on movable, card-shaped placards is the same as the number of empty white windows. In Movable Alphabet mode, players must drag down letters from an alphabet above. At any time, players can touch the photo, placard, window, or letter to hear its sound or word aloud.
In matching letters to pictures, of several cognitive steps, the first may be touching the picture to hear the corresponding word aloud. This reinforces the idea of equivalency between the picture, its signifier as spoken, and its signifier as written. The child develops a firm understanding of language as a tool to represent things that are concrete or abstract, a tool that works the same way whether it is spoken/heard or written/read. The second step may be touching the letter, to hear its sound. This reinforces the idea that each of the alphabet's letters has a name, and each has a sound or phoneme it produces. The third cognitive step may be dragging the letter to the correct empty white window. In the process of dragging it must be touched, and so the child hears the letter's sound again as it is moved. Placed correctly, it stays in the square, and placed incorrectly, it is ejected. There are no points, timers, or rewards upon completion. Completely non-competitive, the child is gently prompted to proceed to the next puzzle.
As with all the educational apps from Preschool University, ABC SPANISH SPELLING MAGIC is well conceived pedagogically, and equally well realized as an interactive, touch sensitive app. The photographs are all colorful and easy to identify, and even some unusual things are included like "koala" or the action "to sell." The app features the voice of a native Spanish speaker from Argentina, Maria Reyes-Wrede, who also teaches at a Spanish immersion school in the Minneapolis area. This, in addition to many other small details, helps contribute to the usability and effectiveness of the app when put into the hands of children.
