DEVONtechnologies Released 3rd Public Beta of DEVONthink Pro (Office) 1.3

February 2, 2007 in Software (F)

[] Coeur d'Alene (Idaho, USA), January 30, 2007 " DEVONtechnologies, LLC releases version 1.3 public beta 3 of DEVONthink Professional and of DEVONthink Professional Office, the only document and information managers for the Mac that are based on artificial intelligence.

DEVONthink Professional Office 1.3b3 adds the possibility to convert PDFs that have not already been made searchable with optical character recognition (OCR) directly from within the application. OCR can be automated using AppleScript and Automator, items can be sent by email by using the contextual menu, and the built-in web server deactivates itself when the user switches to another database for higher security.

In addition, DEVONthink Professional Office 1.3b3 supports more Brother and HP scan applications, downsamples PDFs to 150 dpi after OCR, and uses relative URLs to improve the compatibility of web sharing with proxies and firewalls.

Both DEVONthink Professional and Professional Office allow to set the default database via the preferences, highlight words selected in the Concordance drawer of PDF, PostScript, and text documents, and don't mark encrypted PDF documents as duplicates anymore. Files that are converted during import into DEVONthink Professional (Office) are noted down in the log, the built-in web browser has been enhanced, and new groups are (again) created inside the currently selected group. Some dysfunctional and unreliable scripts have been removed.

Both, DEVONthink Professional and Professional Office 1.3b3 also enhance the performance and fix minor bugs and glitches.

DEVONthink Professional Office is a package of extensions to the regular Professional edition of DEVONthink:

- Professional email archiving, supports all standard email applications
- Paper capture including optical character recognition (OCR)
- Integrated web server, lets other users search databases using a web browser

Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann, President of DEVONtechnologies: "DEVONthink Professional Office propels the successful concept of DEVONthink a huge step forward. With the integration of email archiving, paper capture, and web sharing it's now the Mac incarnation of what they had in mind when they invented the term 'paperless office'."

DEVONthink Professional and Professional Office 1.3b3 require Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. Both variants are immediately available as public betas from The final 1.3 release of both editions is scheduled for February 2007. DEVONthink Professional can be tested for free for 150 hours of runtime until it needs to be properly licensed; DEVONthink Professional Office does not require a valid license code within the public beta period, but the email import function is limited to 200 messages per day and the OCR function is limited to 20 documents per day.

DEVONthink Professional Office sells for an introductory price of US$ 139.95 during the public beta period in DEVONtechnologies' online shop. After the end of the public beta period, the regular price will be US$ 149.95. Users of DEVONthink Professional or DEVONthink Personal are able to upgrade for the price difference of US$ 60 or US$ 100 respectively. Upgrade coupons are available. DEVONthink Professional Office is also available together with DEVONagent as the 'Infoworker's Pro Office Bundle' for US$ 159.95.

In today's world, everything is digital. From shopping receipts to important research papers, peoples' lives often fill their hard drives in the form of emails, PDFs, Word documents, multimedia files and more. Questions eventually pop up, like where to store all of this stuff? How to organize these very different file types, and even better, how to find the exact file one is looking for the second one needs it? It's almost as if one needs a second brain just to keep one's digital life straight.

Enter DEVONthink: The solution to this digital age conundrum. It is a second brain, the one and only database for all digital files, be they PDFs, emails, Word documents or even multimedia files. Boasting a refined artificial intelligence, DEVONthink is exceedingly flexible and adapts to the user's personal needs. And if the files are not digital yet, paper capture support is already built-in (DEVONthink Pro Office only.)

Users can use it as their document repository, their filing cabinet, their email archive, or their project organizer; DEVONthink can do it all. One can even collect and organize data from the web, enrich it with sound and movie files, and then export the finished product as a website or to an Apple Pages document to print. Or one can copy the content to an iPod! The possibilities are only as limited as the user's imagination.

Because DEVONthink keeps all important data in one database, it doesn't matter where the data is physically located. DEVONthink uniquely integrates both local documents and live content from the Internet to keep all project-related information together in one place. No more folders full of loosely organized files and overflowing bookmark bars in Safari; with DEVONthink, the user seamlessly mixes local documents, clippings, and live web pages in one dynamic database.

DEVONthink is not only a simple database, it's a flexible work environment, too, with powerful management features suited to any professional project. It provides the user with all the tools she or he needs to effectively work with documents. The integrated RTF editor makes it easy to write new documents, or the users can open documents in a third-party application.

DEVONthink is based on a powerful artificial intelligence (AI) architecture that helps organize and navigate information collections quickly and accurately. It assists its users with both filing documents and with finding similar items, and can help make connections that they might have missed on their own. It can even master huge data collections with a few simple clicks, saving time and aggravation.

Finally, DEVONthink Pro Office allows to share the accumulated and organized knowledge. Users can post it to their websites, or they can let their coworkers access databases with a familiar search-engine like interface using standard web browsers. Depending on the network setup, it's even possible to search shared databases over the Internet.

DEVONtechnologies LLC, founded in 2002, incorporated in 2004 and headquartered in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, USA, researches in the field of semantic and associative data analysis and synthesis, and develops key applications based on the DEVONtechnology. Named after the Devonian Period, the DEVONtechnology marks the departure into a new age of data processing. The main focus of all activities is clearly on using the robust, flexible and versatile architecture intelligently to create rock-solid applications for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to databases, intelligent agents, data-mining, information retrieval and human-computer-interfaces.
