DEVONthink Pro (Office) 1.3.2 - MailTags, ExactScan Support and More

August 24, 2007 in Software (E)

[] Coeur d'Alene (Idaho, USA), August 23, 2007 - DEVONtechnologies, LLC releases an update to version 1.3.2 for its high-end information manager DEVONthink in both Professional and Professional Office editions.

DEVONthink Professional Office 1.3.2 adds support for MailTags 2.0 notes, allows to set the resolution and the compression of PDFs generated by the built-in IRIS OCR engine, and supports ExactCODE's ExactScan software driving Avision document scanners. For the email import, the user can now set a default encoding that will be used if the to-be-imported email message does not provide encoding information itself. Enriched text messages support quoting and URL handling, and email messages can be imported more than once now, showing up as replicants in the database. In addition, URLs in text messages are detected more reliably and messages that couldn't be decoded show a better descriptive text now.

Both Professional and Professional Office editions now allow the user to set the background color of rich text documents, support grouping of found documents directly from within Classify and See Also drawers, and read Finder and Spotlight comments when sync'ing an indexed folder with a group in the database. The Dashboard widgets have been graphically completely overhauled, and new file name extensions for plain text files are now recognized. The Download Manager supports the new file name extensions for Microsoft Office documents in XML format and many functions connected to displaying web pages as well as parsing HTML and XML files have been improved, e.g., the built-in advertisement filter.

On the data security side, DEVONthink Professional checks for and repairs more problems than before, flushes the file system cache more often, and uses a background task so that it cannot crash or freeze when the PDFKit or Quartz crash while importing or converting PDF or PostScript files. Also, damaged system fonts cannot make DEVONthink Professional unstable any more. Finally, many minor internal improvements and fixes make DEVONthink Professional 1.3.2 faster and more stable.

DEVONthink Professional and Professional Office require Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. They can be downloaded for free from and can be test-driven for free for 150 hours of runtime until they need to be properly licensed; the email import function of DEVONthink Professional Office is limited to 200 messages per day and the OCR function is limited to 20 documents per day during the trial period. DEVONthink Professional Office sells for US$ 149.95, DEVONthink Professional for US$ 79.95 in DEVONtechnologies' online shop.

In today's world, everything is digital. From shopping receipts to important research papers, peoples' lives often fill their hard drives in the form of emails, PDFs, Word documents, multimedia files and more. Questions eventually pop up, like where to store all of this stuff? How to organize these very different file types, and even better, how to find the exact file one is looking for the second one needs it? It's almost as if one needs a second brain just to keep one's digital life straight.

Enter DEVONthink: The solution to this digital age conundrum. It is a second brain, the one and only database for all digital files, be they PDFs, emails, Word documents or even multimedia files. Boasting a refined artificial intelligence, DEVONthink is exceedingly flexible and adapts to the user's personal needs. And if the files are not digital yet, paper capture support is already built-in (DEVONthink Pro Office only.)

Users can use it as their document repository, their filing cabinet, their email archive, or their project organizer; DEVONthink can do it all. One can even collect and organize data from the web, enrich it with sound and movie files, and then export the finished product as a website or to an Apple Pages document to print. Or one can copy the content to an iPod! The possibilities are only as limited as the user's imagination.

Because DEVONthink keeps all important data in one database, it doesn't matter where the data is physically located. DEVONthink uniquely integrates both local documents and live content from the Internet to keep all project-related information together in one place. No more folders full of loosely organized files and overflowing bookmark bars in Safari; with DEVONthink, the user seamlessly mixes local documents, clippings, and live web pages in one dynamic database.

DEVONthink is not only a simple database, it's a flexible work environment, too, with powerful management features suited to any professional project. It provides the user with all the tools she or he needs to effectively work with documents. The integrated RTF editor makes it easy to write new documents, or the users can open documents in a third-party application.

DEVONthink is based on a powerful artificial intelligence (AI) architecture that helps organize and navigate information collections quickly and accurately. It assists its users with both filing documents and with finding similar items, and can help make connections that they might have missed on their own. It can even master huge data collections with a few simple clicks, saving time and aggravation.

Finally, DEVONthink Pro Office allows to share the accumulated and organized knowledge. Users can post it to their websites, or they can let their coworkers access databases with a familiar search-engine like interface using standard web browsers. Depending on the network setup, it's even possible to search shared databases over the Internet.
