iCarbs App Provides Diabetics with Glycemic Index in Addition to Carbs

[prMac.com] Revere, Massachusetts - Independent developer James Hollender's iCarbs 3.5, one of 9 iNutrient apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, provides not only Carbohydrate info but also Glycemic index. iCarbs allows anyone to easily find out the carbohydrate content in over 1,100 different food servings. The application offers critical information for individuals who need to keep track of their carbohydrate intake. Version 3.5 takes advantage of iOS6, and if you have the new iPhone 5, its larger screen size. All of the apps in the iNutrient suite are universal and can also be run on the iPads using their full screen area.
Matt Dinkins, an iCarbs user, reports, "We really like your app and use it quite often. Both my dauthers (12 and 14) areType 1 Diabetic and your app is invaluable to us when we go out to eat, or just need to look up the carn count for a banana, apple, etc. Really helps trying to figure out the amount of insulin to use." He went on to ask if Glycemic Index could be added to the app saying, "it would give them a basic idea of how long it takes food to digest.For people on insulin pumps, this would give them the basis on how long to extend the infusion of insulin." As it turns out this information has been in the app for some time since "Carbohydrate by Weight" is essentially the same as "Glycemic Index".
New in a previous update to all 9 iNutrient apps (iCals, iCarbs, iCholesterol, iFiber, iProteins, iSatFat, iSodium, iSugars and Vitamin K) was the capability to record Custom Serving Sizes from 1 to 500 grams in 0.1 gram increments. Users can easily adjust the amounts while viewing the weight in not only grams, but also kilograms, ounces and pounds. In addition to immediate weight updates as you change the number of grams, the nutrient content and calories get updated also. This makes it easy to record the exact serving size you're looking for based on any of the variables: 9 for Vitamin K, 6 for iCals, and 7 for each of the others.
The iCarbs app provides information about foods and how they are rated for carbohydrate content. This is given as a means to assist in deciding which foods to eat. This can help to make sure users don't exceed their recommended daily amount of carbohydrates if they are diabetic, or if they're getting enough in the case of body builders. The following colors help readily identify which is which:
* Black = Rated extremely high in Carbohydrates (45.01 - 166.46 g)
* Dark Red = Rated very high in Carbohydrates (30.01 - 45.00 g)
* Red = Rated high in Carbohydrates (15.01 - 30.00 g)
* Orange = Rated moderately high in Carbohydrates (12.01 - 15.00 g)
* Yellow = Rated moderate in Carbohydrates (9.01 - 12.00 g)
* Light Green = Rated moderately low in Carbohydrates (6.01 - 9.00 g)
* Green = Rated low in Carbohydrates (3.01 - 6.00 g)
* Cyan = Rated very low in Carbohydrates (0.01 - 3.00 g)
* White = Rated extremely low in Carbohydrates (less than 0.01 g)
There are eight tables listing foods:

* Fast Foods
* Fruits & Vegetables
* Meat, Fish & Shellfish
* Dairy & Egg
* Cereal Grains & Pasta
The All Foods table includes a search capability to quickly find food servings you are interested in. Selecting an item in any of the tables will display pertinent information about the selected food serving:
* Food Title
* Weight in grams
* Common Measure, e.g., 1/2 cup, etc.
* Carbohydrate Content
* Carbohydrate by Weight (Glycemic Index)
* USDA Description
* USDA Food Group
* USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference ID
Information is derived from the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference: Carbohydrate Content of Selected Foods per Common Measure. There are currently over 1,100 different food servings included, searchable using approximately 2,500 names (some foods are known by different names or how they are prepared, e.g., "Egg, Scrambled" and "Scrambled Egg").
