HoudahGeo 3.4 - Mac photo geocoding with gps4cam pro for iPhone

in Image Editing (E)

[prMac.com] Luxembourg - Houdah Software today announces HoudahGeo 3.4, an update to their widely acclaimed photo geocoding solution for Mac OS X. HoudahGeo users can "pin" photos to locations where they were taken. HoudahGeo can store latitude, longitude and altitude information right within the image file - invisibly with no loss of quality. HoudahGeo writes EXIF, XMP and IPTC tags.

HoudahGeo is tightly integrated with iPhoto and Aperture Places. It offers a myriad of ways to geocode and publish photos. HoudahGeo can publish projects to EveryTrail.com, prepare them for viewing in Google Earth and upload photos to Flickr and Locr. As a one-stop geocoding for the Mac, HoudahGeo caters to two very different needs:

* Geotagging for archival purposes using EXIF, XMP and IPTC tags
* Geocoding for publishing to Google Earth, Flickr, locr, EveryTrail or Evernote

HoudahGeo allows for automatic geocoding from GPS track logs. A GPS device is however optional. HoudahGeo provides several options for manual geocoding. The most popular of which being the Map Geocoding pane: this allows for finding and selecting locations on a map. HoudahGeo gives users a choice of high quality Bing maps and satellite imagery, gorgeous MapBox maps and satellite imagery as well as CloudMade maps based on OpenStreet data.

The combination of HoudahGeo and gps4cam pro make photo geocoding easier than ever before. Running on a GPS-enabled iPhone, gps4cam pro makes an exact record of its owner's travels. Transferring the recorded track log could not be easier: a photograph of a QR code displayed by gps4cam at the end of the trip should be loaded into HoudahGeo along with the photos to be tagged. From the information contained in the QR code, HoudahGeo loads track logs, derives camera clock settings and geocodes photos taken during the trip. No additional setup is needed.

If a dedicated GPS device was used, HoudahGeo will be able to use track logs from that device and still rely on gps4cam to get accurate camera clock settings. The traditionally trickiest part - camera clock setup - of geocoding has just become as easy as taking a picture!

As they should say, "the best GPS is the one that's with you". Usually that would be your GPS-enabled phone. gps4cam pro is a track logger application for iPhone. A simplified version, gps4cam is also available for both iPhone and Android.

Key features of gps4cam pro:
* No need to manually synchronize the time and date of your iPhone and your camera
* Visualize the trip and different capture points on a map
* Share one bar code with several cameras
* Option to represent long trips using a single QR code by storing track log data on Dropbox

"The use of a QR code is unique for this kind of application and is a big advantage for geotagging. Thanks to this barcode you don't have to geotag every photo manually and to synchronize yourself the time and date between your iPhone and your camera. Also, one QR code can be photographed by more than one person, so that you can geotag pictures made by a whole group with only one iPhone." - Salian Parinita, DPReview

The integration between gps4cam and HoudahGeo brings benefits to both HoudahGeo and gps4cam users:
* HoudahGeo users gain a very simple way of setting up camera clock configuration
* They no longer need to worry about time zone or inaccurate camera clocks
* gps4cam provides a good alternative to GPS track loggers prices $100 and up
* Existing gps4cam users gain access to the wealth of tools and export options available through HoudahGeo
* HoudahGeo's build-in maps allow for double-checking and adjusting geotags
* HoudahGeo can visualize or publish on Google Earth, Flickr, EveryTrail, locr or Evernote

HoudahGeo 3.4 adds the following enhancements and fixes:
* HoudahGeo can load track logs from QR codes created by the gps4cam iPhone application
* HoudahGeo can now infer camera clock settings when given the exact time a photo was taken
* Camera clock setup in HoudahGeo is fully automatic when working with gps4cam QR codes
* Camera clock error may be specified by entering the time as currently displayed on the camera
* On first load, HoudahGeo centers the map on the current track log and photos
* Map bounds and zoom level are preserved when switching providers: Bing, MapBox or CloudMade
* Fine-tuned geocoding algorithm for situations where track points are 4 or more minutes apart
* The users' manual has been updated with screenshots
* Updated for compatibility with Evernote 5.0.7
* Fixes bugs where image previews could cause crashes on certain configurations
* Fixes a bug where HoudahGeo could omit to load iPhoto/Aperture metadata
* Fixes a bug where the geocoding map could show more than one marker during geocoding
