Far away in the Sea of Tranquillity lies the Island of Infinity, home to the last one of every extinct species. Infinity has a secret for the world but Moog, a boy from Battersea in London, and Rockford his dog, are the only one who can deliver its message. Travelling to Infinity, Moog and Rockford get drawn into an adventure in sound that threatens the entire human race.
RRO has now been downloaded or streamed on the web by over 2,000,000 people. Acclaimed by teachers, educationalists and pupils, its ecological story and lesson plans have reached almost a 1,000,000 additional school children across the world. In many schools it is replacing Al Gore's 'Inconvenient Truth' movie as an eco-education aid for younger children.
Children Of All Ages:
Although principally aimed at 6 - 12 year olds and their families, the story is now reaching a far wider audience, from pre-school children to teenagers, parents and grandparents.
This is certainly not a traditional 'stage musical' with hammy songs, Rockford's diverse musical inspiration can be found in The Beatles, The Flaming Lips, The Streets, Jeff Wayne's 'War of the Worlds', The Small Faces, Genesis, XTC and works such as Roger Glover's 'Butterfly Ball', and Harry Nilssen's 'The Point'. But really, it's not like anything else - a funny, sad, psychedelic, spellbinding, thought provoking 21st Century adventure.
Not A Mega-Corp:
Rockford's Rock Opera is NOT the creation of a global entertainment corp, It is the work of award winning alternative entrepreneurs, 'Sweetapple', (www.sweetapple.co.uk) and a handful of dedicated people working for the love of this amazing, original story. The project is entirely self-produced and financed.
The Message - acclaimed by the World Wildlife Fund:
Featuring and scripted by respected BBC writer and comedian, Steve Punt, this is also a story with an original ecological message - a unique 'take' on the threat of extinction and the effect man is having upon life on earth. The Rockford's Rock Opera website is full of fascinating information about the story and the facts behind the fiction. As a result, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has acclaimed the project.

The Making Of Rockford:
Rockford's Rock Opera was recorded and mixed on an Apple PowerMac G5 running Logic 7 and 8 software.
The recording process included the recording and mixing of all 20 songs, the recording, mixing and editing of all narration and dialogue and then, the sound design, production and editing of the whole two and half hour adventure in sound.
Technically the fact that this was all done within one computer was important as it was only by keeping the project 'small' in this way that one person - Matthew Sweetapple, was able to focus on the piece as a whole and do it all. In some ways the limitations enabled the process that could have otherwise become so big it would never have been completed.
Technology in the hands of dedicated creators is now allowing more large-scale projects to happen. In the past, it was only musicians like Jeff Wayne (who owned his own studio) who could create such major musical stories.
Now, with a Mac and lots and lots of time, home-based creators can deliver big audio projects and now, with the Internet and apps, they can reach a world audience too...
