Wine Book Goes Interactive on the iPad with Apple's iBooks Author

[prMac.com] London, United Kingdom - Following the huge success of Jasper Morris' award-winning wine book Inside Burgundy, Berry Bros. & Rudd Press (BBR Press) has announced the launch of the first two of a series of interactive eBooks. BBR Press was convinced that it was possible to harness the manoeuvrability, the searchability and portability of the iPad (R) - without losing the structure and beauty of a classic book.
Created on Apple's new iBooks Author program, the first volume of the series, Inside Burgundy: Cte de Beaune brings video, zoomable maps, interactive links and personal note-taking to wine books for the first time. The widely-praised maps of the vineyards can be zoomed with one tap, revealing the smallest details. There are videos of the author Jasper Morris MW (Master of Wine): readers can walk around the vineyards with him as he explains key quality factors - "the next best thing to actually being there," says the author.
Cte de Beaune has live links to take readers from the maps to the text on grands crus and premiers crus, and a glossary by Jasper Morris that explains key terms at the tap of a finger. Readers can add their own tasting notes, even turn their notes into study cards - making the eBook a personal reference. The superb clarity of the iPad screen makes the hundreds of colour photographs - new to the eBook edition - leap into life.
The eBook has been produced by the same editorial and design team as the original, $75.00 USD, hardback. Simon Berry, Chairman of Berry Bros. & Rudd, says: "When BBR Press published Jasper's Inside Burgundy, we already realised that the old-tech elegance of the 656-page volume might be complemented by the new-tech world of eBooks. For one thing, nearly five pounds is a little unwieldy if you're visiting the vineyards...
"After much research, we chose the iBooks Author platform, launched in January. For us, it retains the quality control, and has let us evolve the title into a very different but equally beautiful product to stand alongside the classic paper version."
The Cte de Beaune eBook, available now on the iPad and the new iPad Mini through the Apple iBookstore at $24.99, will be followed by several more to complete, update and extend Inside Burgundy. Released at the same time is Inside Burgundy: The Annual Report - this first, 2012/13 edition is offered free as an introduction to the series for this year only.
Chris Foulkes of Berry Bros. & Rudd Press adds: "There's nothing else like it among eBooks on the iPad. There are plenty of apps, as opposed to eBooks, that offer bells and whistles, but those formats lack the enhancements and elegance we require.
"We admire the excellence of content and sophisticated interface pioneered by titles like The Waste Land (Faber & Faber/Touch Press). But The Waste Land is an app, and there are many reasons to take the eBook route, rather than create an app. To do one well costs a six-figure sum, would inevitably involve technical, not publishing, skills with commensurate loss of control by author, editors and designers - and apps are not found in the iBookstore where our readers instinctively look for content," says Chris.
"A debate is currently raging about how on-screen reading will alter the experience: should publishers move the traditional book onto the device, or should they try to create something wholly new, a product that owes nothing to paper and ink? We think we've found a synthesis that moves the book tradition forward."

The report - which is free for this first edition - also features the first news of the 2012 growing season and detailed reports on the vintages from 2011 back to the 19th century, with the more recent years fully updated with his latest assessments of their progress. Inside Burgundy: The Annual Report will be produced as an eBook every Autumn, with expanded coverage to include Jasper's essays on each year's news and developments in Burgundy.
Further interactive eBooks are in preparation. 'Inside Burgundy: Cte de Nuits' will be published in spring 2013. Other volumes will cover Chablis, Maconnais, Cte Chalonnaise and Beaujolais. Each section is not only enhanced by all the eBook features, but updated and extended.
