Listening to documents with Read4Me

March 16, 2012 in Software

[prMac.com] Amsterdam, the Netherlands - Read4Me 1.6.2 creates AudioBooks with multiple voices in 27 languages. Use this Mac app to listen to text documents in a wide variety of voices. Support proof reading with audio, create voice-over tracks for presentations, even create AudioBooks to listen to on the road. In 2006 Read4Me started as a simple text editor designed for speech, to catch errors beyond the spell checker. Now it includes a tagging palette to change voices, or speed, and to tune the OS X speech synthesis.

Voice Coach is a unique feature of Read4me that allows you to embed pauses, pitch & rate changes into your text. The speech can even change to another voice in a different language when a special tag appears within the text. This is useful for children's stories and plays, and for language learning.

Macs with OS X Lion can speak 26 languages and also English dialects such as British, Irish and Scottish. Apple supplies additional voices for downloading, free of charge (other vendors sell even more voices). Downloading and installing the voices with Read4Me's help is easy. High quality voices for Arabic, Cantonese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai and Turkish.

A reason for the success of this app is that people like being read to, instead of reading themselves, but not always for convenience as this user reports: "As soon as I saved a test file in m4p audiobook format, I knew it would become the single most useful program in my world (honestly). I have difficulty seeing and having the ability to transform digital books into audio books is the one thing that will keep me sane. Until now, the only way I could do that was to convert them to mp3, and then struggle with them in iTunes as music files."
