[prMac.com] London, United Kingdom - Released on the app store today, Shapes 1.0 for iPad takes a blockbuster arcade game concept and adapts it specifically for children. An enchanting game based in a cardboard world, Shapes has numerous interactive background elements to captivate young children and transitions between day and night. The core game centers around cardboard shapes that float across the screen and can be torn apart with the swipe of a finger, as a shape is broken its name is spoken.

Teaching shape recognition for the core shapes (circle, triangle and square) is one of the main aims of Shapes although the game also seeks to improve hand-to-eye coordination and timing through a carefully adjusted difficulty level tailored to children. Shapes is available to download on the iTunes App Store now.

"I wanted to create an app that was fun for kids to play without making learning a chore," says Ryan Younger, the developer of Shapes for iPad. "After my toddler inadvertently opened the Fruit Ninja app and started to intuitively start swiping the colorful fruit, the idea was borne. I was surprised to find that there were no other apps taking advantage of this great swipe-to-break game concept in the context of pre-school education".

Since the 2010 launch, the iPad has excelled in bringing a plethora of fantastic educational apps to market, Apple have embraced this model allowing developers to offer discounts to educational institutions buying their apps. Reaching 25 billion downloads in March 2012 the App Store currently offers over 550,00 apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users worldwide, with the Mac App store extending apps to desktop computers educational apps look to be a major feature in the education of young children for the foreseeable future.
